Pope Leo issues Apostolic Letter "In Unitate Fidei" on the Nicene Creed celebrating the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea in 325. The text makes no mention of the Virgin Mary while performing textual exegesis of surrounding terms. The text also eliminates the filioque relegating it to a footnote and suggesting that "now" the creed reads "I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified"
